Can You Freelance in the UAE? Visa and Permit Rules

This guide explains how your residence status affects your setup, what work you can accept and which clients you can work with through our setup.

What Do You Need to Freelance in the UAE?

Before accepting paid freelance work, check four parts of your setup:

1. Work authorisation: You need suitable work authorisation covering the services you provide.

2. Residence status: You need eligible UAE residence or another accepted status.

3. Professional activity: Your services must match the activity covered by your applicable work authorisation.

4. Client acceptance: Your client must approve your documents and complete its onboarding process.

The UAE provides different work-permit categories for different working arrangements. Your current visa or Emirates ID does not automatically give you permission to accept freelance projects.

How Does Your Residence Status Affect Your Setup?

Your residence status determines whether you need UAE residence included in your membership or already hold suitable UAE residence and only need the applicable work-authorisation arrangement.

If You Need UAE Residence

If you need UAE residence included in your membership, our Freelancer Membership - 1 Year and Freelancer Membership - 2 Year options include UAE residence sponsorship and applicable work-authorisation administration.
The memberships include:

• UAE residence sponsorship for one or two years, depending on the membership you select

• Applicable work-authorisation administration

• Emirates ID administration

• Invoicing support

• Access to Freelancer Central

These options are intended for eligible professionals who want to live and freelance from within the UAE.

If You Already Have UAE Residence

Holding a residence visa does not automatically authorise freelance work. You still need suitable work authorisation covering the services you plan to provide.

Our Freelancer Membership is available to eligible dependent-visa holders, Golden Visa holders and GCC nationals who do not need us to arrange new UAE residence sponsorship. It includes applicable work-authorisation administration, invoicing support and access to Freelancer Central.

If You Are Employed or Studying in the UAE

A visa or permit connected to your employment or studies should not be treated as permission to accept separate freelance work.

Your current status, sponsor requirements and proposed professional activity need to be checked first. Contact us before accepting paid work so we can confirm whether our setup applies and which documents you need.

Work Authorisation vs Residence Visa vs Emirates ID

These documents serve different purposes:

• Work authorisation: Covers the paid services you can provide under the applicable arrangement.

• Residence visa: Allows you to reside in the UAE for its stated validity period.

• Emirates ID: Provides official identification for UAE residents.

A residence visa or Emirates ID does not replace the applicable work authorisation required for your freelance activity.

What Work Can You Accept?

You can accept projects that fall within the professional activity covered by your applicable work-authorisation arrangement. Your service agreement and invoices should also match that activity.

You can work with multiple clients through our setup when each project:

• Matches your professional activity

• Is accepted by the client

• Meets the client’s onboarding requirements

• Uses the correct contracting and invoicing process

If a client asks for a service outside the professional activity covered by your setup, confirm whether another activity is required before accepting the project. You can check our supported freelance activities to see which professional services our setup covers.

Which Clients Can You Work With?

Through our setup, you can provide eligible professional services to:

• Mainland companies

• Most free-zone companies

• Government organisations

• Semi-government organisations

Your professional activity must cover the project, and the client must accept our setup.

Before starting work, ask the client whether it requires:

• A copy of your applicable work-authorisation documents

• Confirmation of your professional activity

• Identification documents

• Vendor registration

• A signed service agreement

• Specific invoice information

Requirements differ between organisations. Confirm them before agreeing to a start date or payment schedule.

How Do Contracts and Invoices Work?

Dynamic Freelancer members use Freelancer Central to manage the administration connected to their freelance work.

You can use the platform to:

• Add and manage client details

• Create service agreements

• Generate invoices

• Track invoice and payment status

• Review status updates for steps included in your membership

• Contact support

Freelancer Central helps you manage your records and invoices. It does not find clients or allocate freelance projects.

What Should You Check Before Freelancing?

Before accepting paid freelance work, confirm that you have suitable work authorisation, your services match the professional activity covered by your setup and your client accepts the setup.

If you need UAE residence, our Freelancer Membership - 1 Year and Freelancer Membership - 2 Year options include UAE residence sponsorship and applicable work-authorisation administration. If you already hold suitable UAE residence or are an eligible GCC national who does not require residence sponsorship, our Freelancer Membership includes applicable work-authorisation administration without arranging new UAE residence sponsorship through us.
